Garnet

การ์เนต หรือ โกเมน มาจากภาษาละติน Granatus มีความหมายว่าเหมือนเมล็ด (Seed-like) ที่ว่าเหมือนนั้นหมายถึงเหมือนเมล็ดสีแดงในผลทับทิม ทั้งนื้ เนื่องจากมักจะได้พบผลึกพลอยโกเมนสีแดงฝังอยู่ในเนื้อหิน โดยมีลักษณะการฝังตัวเหมือนเมล็ดในผลทับทิม

The name “garnet” originates from the medieval Latin granatus, meaning “pomegranate,” in reference to the similarity of the red color.
Garnet is actually a group of several minerals. Five of these – pyrope, almandine, spessartine, grossular and andradite – are important as gems. Pyrope and almandine range from purple to red. Spessartine is found in exciting oranges and yellows, while andradite is mostly yellow to green (the gem variety demantoid)

Amethyst

Aquamarine

อะความารีน เป็นแร่ชนิดหนึ่งในตระกูลเบริล (Beryl) ซึ่งก็คือแร่ตระกูลเดียวกับมรกต มีสีน้ำเงินแกมเขียว (Greenish blue) ไปจนกระทั่ง สีเขียวแกมน้ำเงิน (bluish green) สีเขียว หรือสีฟ้าน้ำทะเลอ่อนไปจนกระทั่งเข้ม คำว่าอะความารีนมาจากภาษาละติน “Aqua” แปลว่า น้ำ “Mare” แปลว่า ทะเล ชื่อเรียกอะความารีนจึงบ่งชี้ถึงสีที่คล้ายกับน้ำทะเลนั่นเอง ตามความเชื่อที่ผ่านมาหลายศตวรรษ มีการนำอะความารีนมาใช้เป็นเครื่องรางของขลังในการป้องกันอุบัติเหตุและอันตรายต่างๆ ถือกันว่าเป็นหินกันภัย (Stone of Safety) และเป็นพลอยแห่งความอ่อนวัยตลอดกาล (Gem of eternal youth) จะช่วยให้ผู้ครอบครองมีจิตว่าง สงบไม่ฟุ้งซ่าน มีแต่ความสุขกายสบายใจ ช่วยให้มีความอดทนสูง ก่อให้เกิดความกล้าหาญ และขจัดความเกียจคร้านทั้งปวง

Aquamarine’s name comes from the Latin for seawater. It is not only the birthstone for March, but it is also given as a present on the 19th wedding anniversary. The aquamarine birthstone evokes the colors of the sea. From deep green-blue to light, slightly greenish blue hues, faceted aquamarines are often free from inclusions and as clear as water, symbolizing purity of spirit and soul.

Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a variety of chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz) that is traditionally semi-translucent to opaque dark green jasper with red inclusions of iron oxides, especially hematite.

Emerald

The word “emerald” comes from smaragdos, ancient Greek for a green gem. Emerald is the green to bluish green variety of beryl, a mineral species that also includes aquamarine as well as beryl in other colors.
It’s also the gem of the twentieth and thirty-fifth wedding anniversaries.

Moonstone

Moonstone is a variety of the feldspar-group mineral orthoclase. During formation, orthoclase and albite separate into alternating layers. When light falls between these thin, flat layers, it scatters in many directions, producing the phenomenon called adularescence. Adularescence is the light that appears to billow across a gemstone, giving its surface a glowing appearance. Moonstone is a birthstone for June, along with pearl and alexandrite.

Alexandrite, with its chameleon-like qualities, is a rare variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Its colour can be a lovely green in daylight or fluorescent light, changing to brownish or purplish red in the incandescent light from a lamp or candle flame. This is a result of the complex way the mineral absorbs light.
Alexandrite’s dramatic colour change is sometimes described as “emerald by day, ruby by night”. Major alexandrite deposits were first discovered in 1830 in Russia’s Ural Mountains. The gem was named after the young Alexander II (1818–1881), heir apparent to the throne.

Pearl

This enchanting June birthstone originates from oceans, lakes and rivers around the world. Pearls are organic gems that grow inside the tissue of a living saltwater or freshwater mollusk (either an oyster or a mussel). Natural pearls form when the mollusk secretes a substance called nacre around an irritant such as a piece of sand or a parasite that has invaded its shell.

Ruby

Peridot

Peridot is the yellowish green to greenish yellow gem variety of the mineral olivine. The word “peridot” comes from the Arabic faridat, meaning gem. The preferred color for peridot is a pure “grass” green without any hint of yellow or brown. Peridot is the gem given to celebrate a 16th wedding anniversary.

Spinel

The name “spinel” comes from the Latin word spina, which means thorn, in reference to the shape of spinel crystals. Spinel offers a range of hues, from orange to intense “stoplight” red, vibrant pink, and all shades of purple, blue, and violet through bluish green. Spinel is traditionally given as a 22nd wedding anniversary gift.

Sardonyx

Sardonyx is a combination of two types of chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz): sard and onyx. Bands of brownish red to brown to dark orange sard alternate with typically white or black layers of onyx. In ancient times, sardonyx was a popular stone for Roman seals and signet rings

Sapphire

The September Birthstone

แซฟไฟร์จัดเป็นแร่ในประเภท (Species) คอรันดัม (Corundum) เช่นเดียวกับทับทิม (Ruby) ซึ่งพลอยคอรันดัมนี้เป็นพลอยที่มีความแข็งรองลงมาจากเพชร ปัจจุบันหากพูดถึงแซฟไฟร์ “Sapphire” คำเดียวจะหมายถึง Blue Sapphire หรือ ไพลิน เพราะ Sapphire มาจากภาษาเปอร์เชีย “Saffir” หรือ จาก ภาษากรีก “Sappheiros” แปลว่า ผู้เป็นที่รักของ Saturn (เทพเจ้าแห่งกรีก) และหมายถึง สีน้ำเงิน (Blue) ชาวเปอร์เซียโบราณเชื่อกันว่าแซฟไฟร์ คือ “หินที่มาจากฟ้า” ตามตำนานกล่าวว่า แซฟไฟร์เป็นพลอยของกษัตริย์ที่ใช้สวมใส่เพื่อป้องกันภยันตราย ทำให้เชื่อกันว่าผู้ที่สวมใสไพลินจะมีชีวิตที่สดใส มีพลังในการดำรงชีวิต และไพลินนี้สามารถปกป้องอันตรายแก่ผู้ที่สวมใส่ได้อีกด้วย นอกจากนี้ยังถือเอาไพลินนี้เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของความจริงใจ และมั่นคงอีกด้วย เป็นสัญลักษณ์ที่คู่รักนิยมมอบเป็นของขวัญให้แก่กันในโอกาสครบรอบการแต่งงานในปีที่ 5, 15, 23 และ ปีที่ 45

Blue sapphire belongs to the mineral species corundum. It can be a pure blue but ranges from greenish blue to violetish blue. The name “sapphire” can also apply to any corundum that’s not red and doesn’t qualify as ruby, another corundum variety. Besides blue sapphire and ruby, the corundum family also includes so-called “fancy sapphires.” They come in violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and intermediate hues. There are also “parti-colored” sapphires that show combinations of different colors. Some stones exhibit the phenomenon known as color change, most often going from blue in daylight or fluorescent lighting to purple under incandescent light. Sapphires can even be gray, black, or brown.
In addition to being the September birthstone, sapphire is also the gem commemorating the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.

Opal

The October Birthstone

โอปอจัดเป็นแร่ในตระกูลควอตซ์ชนิดหนึ่ง คือมีเนื้อเป็นซิลิกา (Silica) และมีน้ำปนอยู่บ้าง เป็นอัญมณีเพียงไม่กี่ชนิดที่ไม่มีโครงสร้างเป็นรูปผลึก แต่มีเนื้อแน่นละเอียดยิบ (Crystalline aggregate) ไม่มีรอยแยกแนวเรียบอย่างรัตนชาติชนิดอื่น มีแต่เฉพาะรอยแตกที่แตกเป็นรูปก้นหอย มีสีสันแปลกตา เป็นประกายเจิดจรัสดั่งสีของสายรุ้ง สีอาจจะเป็นสีขาว ไม่มีสี สีเหลือง แดง น้ำตาล เขียว เทา และน้ำเงิน ขึ้นกับมลทินที่เข้ามาเจือปนอยู่ Precious opal เป็นโอปอที่มีคุณสมบัติพิเศษ คือมีการเล่นสีเป็นประกายสวยงาม คล้ายเหลือบประกายรุ้งที่เปลี่ยนสีได้เมื่อหมุนพลอยไปมาในทิศทางที่ต่างกัน เรียกปรากฏการณ์พิเศษนี้ว่า โอปอเลสเซนต์ (Opalescence) หรือ การเล่นสี (Play of color)

Opal is known for its unique display of flashing rainbow colors called play-of-color. There are two broad classes of opal: precious and common. Precious opal displays play-of-color, common opal does not. Play-of-color occurs in precious opal because it’s made up of sub-microscopic spheres stacked in a grid-like pattern, they break up into the colors of the rainbow, called spectral colors. Play-of-color is the result.

Tourmaline

The October Birthstone

ทัวร์มาลีน เป็นแร่ที่อยู่กลุ่มของซิลิเกต คำว่า “ทัวร์มาลีน” มาจากภาษาสิงหล “ทุรมาลี” แปลว่า หินที่มีหลายสีปนกัน ทัวร์มาลีน (Tourmaline) เป็นอัญมณีที่มีหลากหลายสี แต่สีที่นิยมมากที่สุด คือ ทัวร์มาลีนสีชมพู (Pink Tourmaline) และ ทัวร์มาลีนสีเขียว (Green Tourmaline)

The name comes from the Sinhalese word toramalli, which means “stone with mixed colours”, because it often has multiple colours in one crystal. Very few gems match tourmaline’s dazzling array of colours. 

Citrine

The November birthstone

ซิทริน มาจากคำ ในภาษาฝรั่งเศส ว่า “Citron” ซึ่งแปลว่ามะนาว จัดอยู่ในตระกูลควอตซ์ (Quartz) ชนิดหนึ่ง สีอยู่ในช่วงสีเหลืองปนแดง สีส้ม และสีส้มอมน้ำตาล แร่เหล็กที่ปะปนอยู่เป็นตัวทำให้ควอตซ์มีสีเหล่านี้ เป็นควอตซ์ที่เกือบจะไม่มีตำหนิและมลทินเลย ซิทรินมีสีเหลือง เหมือน โทแพซ (Topaz) หรือ บุษราคัมลังกา มาก จึงทำให้เข้าใจผิดได้บ่อย

Citrine is rare in nature, the transparent yellow to brownish orange variety of quartz. It’s an attractive alternative not only for topaz, but also for yellow sapphire. The finest citrine color is a saturated yellow to reddish orange free of brownish tints. It’s also given for the thirteenth wedding anniversary.

Topaz

The November birthstone

Topaz is allochromatic, which means that its color is caused by impurity elements or defects in its crystal structure rather than by an element of its basic chemical composition. The element chromium causes natural pink, red, and violet-to-purple colors in topaz. Imperfections at the atomic level in topaz crystal structure can cause yellow, brown, and blue color. Brown is a common topaz color, and the gem is sometimes mistakenly called “smoky quartz.”

แทนซาไนต์ เป็นแร่ธรรมชาติในตระกูลซอยไซท์ (zoisite) ประกอบไปด้วยแคลเซียม อลูมิเนียม และซิลิเกต มีสีน้ำเงินแกมม่วง แทนซาไนท์ที่เป็นที่ต้องการมากที่สุด คือ สีน้ำเงินล้อมรอบไปด้วยสีม่วงอย่างงดงาม มีผลึกมากกว่า 10 กะรัต ตามสถิติโลกแทนซาไนท์ที่มีผลึกมากที่สุดในโลก คือ 737.81กะรัต หนึ่งในจำนวนแทนซาไนท์ที่มีผลึกมาก (242 กะรัต) ถูกขนานนามว่าเป็น Queen of Kilimanjaro ชื่อแทนซาไนท์ เป็นชื่อที่บริษัท Tiffany & Co. ซึ่งเป็นบริษัทอัญมณีของนิวยอร์กตั้งขึ้น ตามแหล่งที่พบคือประเทศแทนซาเนีย ในทวีปแอฟริกา

Tanzanite was eventually named tanzanite in honor of its country of origin. The tanzanite birthstone is often described as “velvety,” mostly because of its deep and saturated color, which ranges from a pure rich blue to violet, with the blue considered most valuable. Tiffany & Co. believed that tanzanite had international appeal and became its main distributor. It is the gem for the 24th wedding anniversary.

เทอร์คอยซ์ เป็นอัญมณีทึบแสง มีตั้งแต่สีฟ้า เขียวฟ้า เขียว และเขียวเหลือง และมักมีเส้นเมทริกซ์ (เศษหินที่ก่อตัวขึ้น) ไหลผ่าน เทอร์คอยซ์ที่จัดว่ามีคุณภาพสูงเป็นที่นิยมจะมีสีฟ้าสม่ำเสมอ หรือที่มีลักษณะลวดลายแบบร่างแห (spider web) ซึ่งเกิดจากมลทินแร่ชนิดอื่นที่เกิดร่วมกับเทอร์คอยซ์ ได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของพลังอำนาจ ความโชคดี ความสำเร็จ และสุขภาพ

Turquoise is a semi-translucent to opaque gem that ranges from blue to green and often has veins of matrix (remnants of the rock in which it formed) running through it. The turquoise birthstone was thought to possess many beneficial powers, like guaranteeing health and good fortune.

เซอร์คอน หรือเพทาย เป็นชื่อที่ได้มาจากภาษาอาราบิคว่า Zarkun ซึ่งแปลว่าสีทอง สามารถพบได้หลากหลายสี เช่น ใสไม่มีสีเมื่อนำมาเจียระไนจะงดงามคล้ายเพชร สีเหลือง สีน้ำตาลแดง สีส้ม สีเขียว สีฟ้า เป็นต้น

Zircon have elicited colorful debate. Some scholars believe it comes from the Arabic word zarkun, meaning “cinnabar” or “vermilion.” Others think the source is the Persian word zargun, or “gold colored.” Considering the broad color palette for this December birthstone – red, orange, yellow, brown, green and blue – either derivation seems possible. Colorless zircon is known for its brilliance and flashes of multicolored light, called fire, which have resulted in centuries of confusion with diamond.
